Nail Trimming

Why Regular Nail Trims Matter for Dogs and Cats

Nail trims are one of the quickest parts of grooming, and one of the most important. Nails that grow too long do not just click on the floor. They change the way a dog stands and walks.

Why Long Nails Are a Problem

  • When nails hit the ground, they push the toes up and shift weight onto the back of the foot.
  • Over time that strains the feet, legs and joints, which is especially hard on older dogs.
  • Long nails catch on carpet and can tear or split.
  • Dewclaws never touch the ground, so they can curl around and grow into the pad.
  • A cat's nails can curl into the pads too, especially in older or less active cats.

What Is the Quick?

Inside each nail is the quick, which carries a blood supply and nerves. Cutting into it hurts and bleeds. When nails are left long, the quick grows longer too, which makes it harder to get the nails short. Regular trims encourage the quick to recede, so the nails can be kept at a healthy length.

How Often to Trim

Most dogs need a trim every three to four weeks, and cats every few weeks as well. A simple test for dogs: if you can hear the nails on a hard floor, they are due.

Making Trims Less Stressful

Practice handling your pet's paws for a few seconds at a time, with treats, between appointments. Skipping the car ride helps too: with mobile grooming, the trim happens right outside your home.
